Booker T. Washington and Kent County Community School have partnered to become a Unified Championship School through Special Olympics Delaware. This is a national project partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The intent, overseen by the organization, is to broaden opportunities for students with disabilities via a positive school climate. There are three components that a Unified Champion School must maintain at this distinguished level:

1. Unified Sports Opportunities-Special Olympics sports teams that include students with and without disabilities.

  • SODE spring soccer tournament- peer partners practiced for 8 weeks prior to competing in the countywide tournament that included neighboring district schools.
  • KCCS and BTW physical education teachers co-planned and facilitated adaptive gym opportunities for peer partners to practice soccer skills as well as engage in a variety of activities geared toward increasing socialization and showcasing the skills of all children.

2. Youth Leadership-Clubs, Student Councils, Respect Clubs

  • Booker T. Washington and KCCS students enjoyed a lunch club where they were invited to eat and play together.
  • The culminating activity was a pizza picnic accompanied by an award ceremony following the SODE soccer tournament.

3. Whole School Engagement - activities that promote school-wide inclusion.

  • Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign
  • Rock your socks
  • Polar Bear Plunge Capital School District & KCCS
